Choose a target rep range. For example, 3 sets of 8–12 reps on a given exercise.

Stay at a weight until you hit the top of the range with solid form. If your goal is 3×12 and you can only do 3×9 cleanly, stay there. Add reps each session until you hit 3×12.

Once you hit the top of the range consistently, increase the load by the smallest increment available — often 2.5 to 5 pounds — and begin again at the bottom of the rep range.

This is called the double progression method, and it's one of the most reliable and sustainable ways to implement progressive overload across a full program.

For bodyweight training, progression works the same way — more reps, harder variations, slower tempo, or reduced assistance. The weight doesn't have to change for the stimulus to increase.

Here's something the fitness industry rarely says plainly: the principles of effective strength training don't change with age. What changes is the margin for error.

Research consistently shows that adults can build meaningful muscle and strength at any age — including well into their 60s, 70s, and beyond. The mechanism is the same.
